Рутина засосала со страшной силой, так что лишь вечно-краткое обновление основных событий и состояний:

Прошёл FF8. Лучше бы книжку написали. Сюжет хороший, персонажи – тоскливые. Из номерных осталась лишь пятая.
Мелкому поставили „диагноз“ – кризис двух лет. В год и четыре месяца. Прикидываю, когда у него будет кризис среднего возраста.
В гости поназаходило куча приятных людей и не очень приятных соседей. Жажда общения утолена, устамши пью кисель и гоняю Disgaea.
Все прожекты подвисли в замороженном статусе, и скорее всего останутся таковыми до окончания „китайского“ сезона, сиречь 20, тудыть его, ноября.
Задаюсь вопросом: какая резина дольше тянется – зимняя или летняя?
Есть ненулёвая вероятность одного свободного места в машине на пути в Финляндию в конце ближайшего января. Предпочтение отдаётся. Предложения благодарятся. Заявки сохраняются. (это сглаз такой, на самом деле я туда совсем не хочу)
Коллекция я-не-такой-как-все футболочек пополнилась и составляет теперь ажно пять экземпляров: две профутбольные, две патриотические и одна оранжевая.
Продвинутые пользователи нетбуков – оно правда удобно или это мода такая? Старое железо надоёло, на полноценное новое жалко тратить денег. Мечусь в сомнениях, короче.
Сюда же вопрос пользователям мобильных интернетов… Которые 3G. Оно работает или G?

Прошёл шестую номерную. Уффф. Двенадцать друзей Терры, блин, причём каждый раскачан до 85го уровня. Конец Кепочки был быстр и ужасен. Тринадцатая появится не раньше апреля 2010. За оставшееся время нужно пройти пятую и восьмую. Ну и в неномерное поиграться, но это, слава богам, опционально.

Когда „сгораешь на работе“ по причине температуры, в голову почему-то лезут Большие Мысли. Слава богам пока не о том как нам обустроить Россию, а всего лишь о жизни и т.п. Горячечный бред, короче.

В номинации Мысль Дня побеждает пока мысль о слове надо. Надо – это такое мифическое слово, которое характеризует отношение к жизни лучше, чем любые другие слова и поступки. Надо, которое большое и главное, объясняет что именно ты считаешь важным, а что – нет. Ведь, в принципе, человеку ничего не надо. Дышать, спать, кушать – необходимо. Это немного другое слово. Надо вынести мусор. Но можно и не выносить. Надо идти на работу. Но можно и не идти. Каждое обычное „надо“ включает в себя компромисс. И только настоящее надо бескомпромиссно и не берёт пленных.

У меня пока надо проявилось только по отношению к собственным детям – я не буду игнорировать голодного ребёнка, даже если мне очень лень. Всё остальное (пока) поддаётся компромиссам и считается частью большой игры. Как-то так. Это я повзрослел и постарел?

Пошёл дальше пить подогретую „Изабеллу“. Выплеск закончил, надеюсь никого не забрызгает.

As world trade becomes increasingly globalized, businesspeople meet their foreign partners more frequently and consequently feel that they know each other better. It is only natural that when they develop a closer relationship, they begin to converse in a more relaxed manner. A funny incident involving some personal discomfort or embarrassment is a good start; a sly attack on a “common enemy” may soon follow.

Humor during business meetings is not infrequent in most European countries, although it is less common among Latins than with Northern peoples, where it is valuable tool for breaking the ice. Perhaps among the Spaniards, Portuguese and Italians, there is little ice to break. Their own racy, gossipy, confiding conversation style constitutes in itself a valid humorous element.

It is in the Anglo-Saxon countries that humor is used systematically. Relaxed in Canada and New Zealand, it can be barbed and provocative in Australia. In the United States, particularly, sarcasm, kidding and feigned indignation are regarded as factors that move the meeting along and help get more done in less time. Time is, after all, money. It is perhaps in Britain, though, that humor is most intertwined in business talk. The British hate heavy or drawn-out meetings and will resort to various forms of humor and distracting tactics to keep it all nice and lively.

However, two nationalities in particular avoid jokes and other forms of humor during the actual business sessions. Germans find it out of place during negotiations. Business is serious and should be treated as such, without irrelevant stories or distractions. If you do not concentrate on the issue, you are not showing respect to your interlocutor. Kidding is, in their eyes, not honest and creates confusion in business discussion. They want to know about price, quality and delivery dates, with some precision, please.

After the meetings are over, Germans are quite willing to relax and joke with their partners in bars, restaurants and at home. Humor and anecdotes are more than welcome in these circumstances, Relaxation, like business discussion and many other activities in Germany, is fairly strictly compartmentalized.

The Japanese also fail to see any benefit in introducing humor into business meetings. They will laugh if they are aware that you have told a joke (it is unlikely they will have understood it), but that is out of sheer politeness. They are normally nervous about understanding your straight talk in the first place, so that any clever nuances or tongue-in-cheek utterances will leave them floundering. They take anything you say quite literally. Americans using expressions like “You are killing me” or “Say that once again and I’ll walk away from this deal” will cause great consternation among their Japanese partners. One U.S. executive, who said a certain clause would “blow the deal out of the water,” was asked, “What water?”

While the introduction of humor in international business talks may bring considerable gain in terms of breaking the ice, speeding up the discussion, escaping from deadlock, putting your partners at ease and winning their confidence in you as a human being, the downside risks are often just as great. What is funny for the French may be anathema to an Arab; your very best story may be utterly incomprehensible to a Chinese; your most innocent anecdote may seriously offend a Turk. Cultural and religious differences may make it impossible for some people to laugh at the same thing. Who can say with certainty what is funny? If all values are relative and culture based, then these include humor, tolerance, even truth itself. And remember that laughter, more often than not, symbolizes embarrassment, nervousness or possibly scorn among Asians.

А вот с этим, как не смешно, у кучи американцев реальная проблема. Все их инстинкты и тренинги, вбитые куда-то глубоко в спинной мозг копчика, заставляют их разбавлять свою речь шутками, когда они пытаются что-то кому-то втюхать. И нет лучшего способа их жестоко обломать и выбить из колеи, чем turn on the Russian, как говорить наш шеф. Всё, что нужно, это перестать понимать английский за пределами школьной программы. И на любую шутку (очень смешные случаются редко, так что каменное лицо держать несложно) реагировать прямым вопросом, что именно он\она имеет в виду. Только очень талантливые (ну или очень тупые) люди способны продолжать юморить в такой атмосфере. Нормальный же продавец начинает тупить, запинаться и жалеть, что с тобой связался. Иногда очень удобно.

С британцами это не работает. Их шутки гораздо более тонкие и, собственно, не напрашиваются на то, чтобы их заметили. Если собеседник не улыбается, они спокойно перестают шутить. Или не перестают, просто так, для собственного удовольствия. Разговор в любом случае не меняется.

Остальные шутят по необходимости, примерно как и нормальные люди. Ни у немцев ни у японцев проблем не замечал. Скорее всего это связано с тем, что когда обе стороны используют неродной язык, шутки и дело стараются максимально разделять, и никто не ожидает, что их оценят (хотя надеется). Чаще всего ценят, пусть и из вежливости.

Although they often appear idealistic and somewhat touchy, they usually end up being very pragmatic. Work toward practical solutions in a cool manner.
Remember that they have an obsession with survival. They have had a hard history in the course of which they usually came off second best in conflicts. Always let them see that you want a win-win situation and allow them room for profit and advancement.
They are suspicious of all foreigners and their motives. Work hard at demonstrating and building up trust.
They have a vertical society; be careful how you move within the hierarchy.
Encourage their creativity—they are proud of it. Don’t be afraid to introduce new and innovative ideas. They are more amenable to quick change than are the neighbors or another neighbors.
They like thoughtful gifts. No products from neighbor country, please.
Try to match their work ethic, punctuality and tenacity.
Remember that they wield several varieties of truth. Take everything with a pinch of salt and avoid taking offense when you discern that facts do not correspond exactly to appearances.
Admire their risk taking and use it to your advantage. Show your willingness to share risks and problems.
It is important to socialize and drink with them in the evening. A certain degree of inebriation on both sides is permissible and expected.

Being put off by their sudden volte-faces. They may occur frequently.
Dwelling on past misdemeanors.
Expectations of smooth or problem-free business with them. Make allowances.

Сорри за паузу, иногда надо и работать. :) Продолжаем разговор. О итальянцах и немцах всё и так ясно, тем более, что Льюис описывает их… описательно, с примерами. С чухоно-азиатами же всё гораздо интереснее.

Japan belongs to the group of reactive, or listening, cultures, the members of which rarely initiate action or discussion, preferring to listen to and establish the other’s position first, then react to it and formulate their own.

Reactive cultures are also found in China, Taiwan, Singapore, Korea, Turkey and Finland. Several other East Asian countries, although occasionally multi-active and excitable, have certain reactive characteristics. In Europe, only Finns are strongly reactive, but Britons, Turks and Swedes fall easily into “listening mode” on occasion.

Reactive cultures listen before they leap. Reactive cultures are the world’s best listeners in as much as they concentrate on what the speaker is saying, do not let their minds wander (difficult for Latins) and rarely, if ever, interrupt a speaker while the discourse or presentation is on-going. When it is finished, they do not reply immediately. A decent period of silence after the speaker has stopped shows respect for the weight of remarks, which must be considered unhurriedly and with due deference.

Even when representatives of a reactive culture begin their reply, they are unlikely to voice any strong opinion immediately. A more probable tactic is to ask further questions on what has been said in order to clarify the speaker’s intent and aspirations. Japanese, particularly, go over each point many times in detail to make sure there are no misunderstandings. Finns, although blunt and direct in the end, shy away from confrontation as long as they can, trying to formulate an approach that suits the other party. The Chinese take their time to assemble a variety of strategies that will avoid discord with the initial proposal.

Reactives are introverted; they distrust a surfeit of words and consequently are adept at nonverbal communication. This is achieved by subtle body language, worlds apart from the excitable gestures of Latins and Africans. Linear-active people find reactive tactics hard to fathom because they do not slot into the linear system (question/reply, cause/effect). Multi-active people, used to extroverted behavior, find them inscrutable—giving little or no feedback. The Finns are the best example of this behavior, reacting even less than the Japanese, who at least pretend to be pleased.

In reactive cultures the preferred mode of communication is monologue—pause—reflection—monologue. If possible, one lets the other side deliver its monologue first. In linear-active and multi-active cultures, the communication mode is a dialogue. One interrupts other’s monologue with frequent comments, even questions, which signify polite interest in what is being said. As soon as one person stops speaking, the other takes up his or her turn immediately, since the Westerner has an extremely weak tolerance for silence.

People belonging to reactive cultures no only tolerate silences well but regard them as a very meaningful, almost refined, part of discourse. The opinions of other party are not to be taken lightly or dismissed with a snappy or flippant retort. Clever, well-formulated arguments require—deserve—lengthy silent consideration. The American, having delivered a sales pitch in Helsinki, leans forward and asks, “Well, Pekka, what do you think?” If you ask Finns what they think, they begin to think. Finns, like Asians, think in silence. An American asked the same question might well pipe up and exclaim, “I’ll tell you what I think!’—allowing no pause to punctuate the proceedings or interfere with Western momentum. Asian momentum takes much longer to achieve. One can compare reactions to shifting gears in the car, where multi-active people go immediately into first gear, which enables them to put their foot down to accelerate (the discussion) and to pass quickly through the second and the third gears as the argument intensifies. Reactive cultures prefer to avoid crashing through the gearbox. Too many revs might cause damage to the engine (discussion). The big wheel turns slower at first and the foot is put down gently. But when momentum is finally achieved, it is likely to be maintained and, moreover, it tends to be in the right direction.

The reactive “reply-monologue” will accordingly be context centered and will presume a considerable amount of knowledge on the part of the listener (who, after all, probably spoke first). Because listener is presumed to be knowledgeable, Japanese, Chinese and Finns will often be satisfied with expressing their thoughts in half-utterances, indicating that the listener can fill in the rest. It is a kind of compliment one pays one’s interlocutor. At such times multi-active, dialogue-oriented people are more receptive than linear-oriented people, who thrive on clearly expressed argument.

Reactive cultures not only rely on utterances and semi-statements to further the conversation, but they indulge in other Eastern habits that confuse the Westerner. They are, for instance, “roundabout,” using impersonal pronouns(“one is leaving”) or the passive voice (“one of the machines seems to have been tampered with”), either to deflect blame or in general aim of politeness.

As reactive cultures tend to use names less frequently than Westerners, the impersonal, vague nature of the discussion is further accentuated. Lack of eye contact, so typical of the East, does not help the situation. The Japanese, evading the Spaniard’s earnest stare, makes the latter feel that they are being boring or saying something distasteful. Asian inscrutability (often appearing on a Finn’s face as a sullen expression) adds to the feeling that the discussion is leading nowhere. Finns and Japanese, embarrassed by another’s stare, seek eye contact only at the beginning of the discussion or when they wish their opponent to take their “turn” in the conversation.

Japanese delegations in opposition with each other are often quite happy to sit in a line on one side of the table and contemplate a neutral spot on the wall facing them as they converse sporadically or muse in joint silence. The occasional sidelong glance will be used to seek confirmation of a point made. Then it’s back to studying the wall again.

Small talk does not come easily to reactive cultures. While Japanese and Chinese trot out well-tried formalisms to indicate courtesy, they tend to regard questions such as “Well, how goes it?” as direct questions and may take the opportunity to voice a complaint. On other occasions their overlong pauses or slow reactions cause Westerners to think they are slow witted or have nothing to say. Turks, in discussion with Germans in Berlin, complained that they never got the chance to present their views fully, while the Germans, for their part, thought the Turks have nothing to say. A high-ranking delegation from the Bank of Finland once told me that, for the same reason, their group found it hard to get a word in at international meetings. “How can we make an impact?” they asked. The Japanese suffer more than any other people in this type of gathering.

The Westerner should always bear in mind that the actual content of the response delivered by a person from a reactive culture represents only a small part of the significance surrounding the event. Context-centered utterances inevitably attach more importance not to what is said, but how it is said, who said it and what is behind what is said. Also, what is not said may be the main point of the reply.

Self-disparagement is another favorite tactic of reactive cultures. It eliminates the possibility of offending through self-esteem; it may draw the opponent into praising the Asian’s conduct or decisions. The Westerner must beware of presuming that self-disparagement is connected with a weak position.

Finally, reactive cultures excel in subtle, nonverbal communication, which compensates for the absence of frequent interjections. Finns, Japanese and Chinese alike are noted for their sighs, almost inaudible groans and agreeable grunts. A sudden intake of breath in Finland indicates agreement, not shock, as it would in case of a Latin. The “oh”,“ha” or “e” of the Japanese is a far surer indication of concurrence than the fixed smile they often assume.

Reactive people have large reserves of energy. They are economical in movement and effort and do not waste time reinventing the wheel. Although they always give the impression of having power in reserve, they are seldom aggressive and rarely aspire to leadership (in the case of Japan, this is somewhat surprising in view of her economic might). France, Britain, and the USA, on the other hand, have not hesitated to seize world leadership in periods of economic or military dominance.

Closer to home

In our world, there are other who are more like us. They have modern civilizations, political parties, industrial complexes and stocks and shares. Their clothes resemble ours. We appear to have similar concepts and values. Yet for some reason, the French and Germans don’t always get on. In Belgium half of society dislikes the other. The Chinese and Japanese are wary of each other, to say the least; neighborly Swedes and Norwegians snipe at each other, and the mutual exasperation that British and American cousins experience is only too well documented.

Truth. The concepts are shining and clear; our notions of them are different. The German notion is that truth, absolute honest truth, even if somewhat unpalatable, will allow participants to achieve a successful outcome to a business meeting. “Die Wahrheit ist die Wahrheit,” say the Germans. Not so, the Chinese would argue—there is no absolute truth. These two conflicting views may both be correct. Many Americans, Norwegians and Finns would agree with the Germans; most Asians and many Italians would agree with the Chinese.

In Germany, Sweden and Finland, where people are generally concerned about what the neighbor think, the drive toward conformity imposes checks and constraints on a person’s ability to refashion veracity. The French, Italians and other Latins are not famous for their candor, which might interfere with the smooth social intercourse they are so fond of. In Japan, where no one must face exposure, be confronted or lose face, truth is a dangerous concept. In Asia, Africa and South America, strict adherence to the truth would destroy the harmony of the relationships between individuals, companies and entire segments of society. Only in Australia is a spade called a spade continent wide, and even there truth often occasions dismay and leads to fistfights.

Contracts and Ethics. As the globalization of business brings executives more frequently together, there is a growing realization that if we examine concepts and values, we can take almost nothing for granted. The word contract translates easily from language to language, but like truth, it has many interpretations. To a Swiss, Scandinavian, American or Brit, a contract is a formal document that has been signed and should be adhered to. Signatures give it a sense of finality. But a Japanese businessperson regards a contract as a starting document to be rewritten and modified as circumstances require. A South American sees it as an ideal that is unlikely to be achieved but that is signed to avoid argument.

Members of most cultures see themselves as ethical, but ethics can be turned upside down. The American calls the Japanese unethical if the latter breaks a contract. The Japanese says it is unethical for the American to apply the terms of the contract if things have changed. Italians have very flexible views on what is ethical and what is not, which sometimes causes Northern Europeans to question their honesty. When Italians bend the rules or “get around” some laws or regulations, they consider they are less ideal-bound than, say, the Swiss, and cut actually closer to reality. They do not consider themselves corrupt or immoral, nor do they admit to illegality. There are many gray areas where “shortcuts” are, in Italian eyes, the only intelligent course of action. In a country where excessive bureaucracy can hold up business for months, currying favor with an official is a matter of common sense.

Common Sense. The very term common sense has to be treated carefully, for it is not as common as it seems. British dictionaries define it as “judgment gained from experience rather than study”; the American lexicon describes it as “judgment that is sound but unsophisticated.” Academics are uncomfortable with commons sense, which tends to pre-empt their research by coming to the same conclusion months earlier. But we must not think that this rough-and-ready wisdom will unite our mix of nationalities. Common sense, although basic and unsophisticated, cannot be neutral. It is common sense in Germany and Sweden to form an orderly bus line. In Naples and Rio it is common sense to get on the bus before anyone else. It would seem common sense for the Japanese to have discarded the Chinese writing system, which does not suit their language and which takes ten years for Japanese children to learn, but they have not done so.

Gossip. Gossip has negative connotations in the Nordic countries and hardly a good name in Anglo-Saxon world. Yet gossip proves far more important to us than we would first admit. It is a vital source of information in business circles in many countries. In Spain, Italy, Brazil and Japan, gossip quickly updates and bypasses facts and statistics, provides political background to commercial decisions and facilitates invaluable debate between people who do not meet officially. The cafés of Madrid and Lisbon overflow with businesspeople, and the whole of Central and South America “networks” merrily until one or two in the morning.

The corridors of power in Brussels, where European business and political legislation are inevitably intertwined, reverberate with gossip. Countries that do not have access to this hot-house exchange of information will be severely disadvantaged.

Another positive aspect of gossip is that it appears to be good for us—that is to say, in line with our natural evolution. Professor Robin Dunbar of University College London points out that humans live in much larger groups than other primates and that language may have evolved as a form of social glue to hold us together. While some animals obviously communicate well in small groups, it is hardly likely that they can gossip about third parties. This ability enables us to form large social or working groups of up to approximately 150 members. This number holds true for ancient “clans,” military fighting units (a company) and even modern firms. Once a commercial enterprise swells well beyond that magic number, it has to be organized into divisions or it becomes less manageable. Intense interest in what other people are doing, finding out from our “group” the latest news about third parties, enables us to network on a large scale and calculate our positions and reactions accordingly. So the Latins, Greeks, and Arabs have got it right after all!

Silence. Silence can be interpreted in different ways. A silent reaction to a business proposal would seem negative to American, German, French, Southern European and Arab executives. In countries as dissimilar as the United States, Peru and Kuwait, conversation is a two-way process, where one partner takes up when the other one leaves off. The intervening silence is two or three seconds in Britain and Germany, less than that in Greece and Kuwait and hardly noticeable in France, Italy and the U.S. However, East Asians and Finns find nothing wrong with silence as a response. “Those who know do not speak; those who speak do not know,” says an old Chinese proverb. In these countries silence is not equated with failure to communicate, but is an integral part of social interaction. What is not said is regarded as important, and lulls in conversation are considered restful, friendly and appropriate. Silence means that you listen and learn; talking a lot merely expresses your cleverness, perhaps egoism and arrogance. Silence protects your individualism and privacy; it also shows respect for the individualism of others. In Finland and Japan it is considered impolite to force one’s opinions on others—it is more appropriate to nod in agreement, smile quietly, avoid opinionated argument or discord.

Начал смотреть Colour of Magic и бросил после первой трети. Халтура. Тьфу.

Rincewind напоминает какого-нибудь озорного дедка из постановок Роу. Twoflower никак не китаец и не маленький. Патриций был хорош, но режиссёр своими „находками“ загубил игру.

Несчастный Tim Curry в очередной раз играет мерзкого злодея. Бедолага.

Спецэффекты ужасны, даже на мониторе прорисованность задников легко замечается, в кинотеатре, наверное, вообще невозможно было смотреть. Смерть выглядит (и звучит) и не серьёзно, и не комично. Я понимаю, что Пратчетт про кровищу не писал, но снимите уж хотя бы нормальную драку. Честное слово, Человек с бульвара Капуцинов лучшее впечатление оставил. :( Тоска и тошниловка. Смотрю жеребьёвку Лиги Европы – сильно интереснее.

Fine-Tuning Categorization

As well as the personal or psychological traits of an individual, the context within which he or she operates is an important factor in fine-tuning categorization. Situational context is infinite in its variations, but three ingredients stand out: age, profession and field of study. Age is, of course, a well-recognized “layer of culture”— attitudes about society, authority, law and freedom are often generational. Younger people test strongly linear-active or multi-active according to their culture, but both groups become more reactive as they get older.

A person’s profession is also an influential factor. Linear-active people often wind up as engineers, accountants and technologists, and the exercise of their profession reinforces their linearity. Teachers, artists and sales and marketing staff lean toward multi-active options, where flexibility and feelings before facts fit their chosen type of work. Doctors and lawyers either need to be reactive by nature or develop reactive skills in order to listen carefully to their clients’ plights. Human resource managers tend to be more hybrid, as they seek and promote diversity in a firm’s human and cultural capital. Successful managers are also generally hybrid, with evenly balanced LMR scores. Skilled senior managers are usually more multi-active than the norm, especially in cultures where linearity is the norm.

Cultural profiles reveal many poor fits in people’s chosen careers. Accountants testing strongly as multi-active are often unhappy in their jobs. Linear scientists sent out to “sell” their company’s products have met with spectacular failures.

One’s field of study also influences his or her cultural profile. Assessments carried out with respondents in Western MBA degree programs show a high score for linearity, especially those from reactive cultures. Japanese students in such programs go for linear options that seem appropriate in the earnestly efficient MBA environment. Tested at home in Japan, however, their reactive score would be much higher.

Multi-actives are less “obedient” to Western-style MBA doctrines, but they will still test higher on the linear scale than they would in their home countries. Students of mathematics find it hard to ignore the linear options, and students of literature find that multi-active choices reflect more adequately the richness and poetic side of human nature. Those studying medicine, law or history have everything to gain by developing their own ability to react to suffering, legal predicaments and the enigma of history itself. Someone studying politics and championing human rights would be obliged to consider most multi-active solutions.

Such contextual considerations play an important role in fine-tuning cultural profiles. Yet they have limitations. One or two thousand years of cultural conditioning lend great momentum to individual’s core beliefs and manner of expressing them. Ideally, cultural assessment like the Personal Cultural Profile should be carried out in one’s home environment, where natural reactions emerge from the ambience of close social bonds and where instinct prevails.

Что тут хочется добавить от себя… Всё, как мне кажется, зависит от методики тестирования, поправки на воздействия инструмента на объект, так сказать. Если японцу сказать нечто вроде „вы – японец мужского пола старше 18 лет, и мы хотим вам задать три вопроса“, то отвечать он на них будет, в первую очередь, как японец. Ему про это напомнили и тем самым нарушили чистоту эксперимента. Если вы ему скажете, что он – водитель с стажем в 15 лет, то ответы будут чуть-чуть иными. Человек всё время старается просчитать последствия своих действий, поэтому ответы всегда будут скорректированы той частью личности, которую вопросы затронули.

Идеальный опросник, таким образом, должен быть задан в письменном виде и никак не указывать испытуемому на то, по какому принципу он был отобран. Примерно так проводят свои исследования маркетологи – ни опрашивающий ни опрашиваемый зачастую не знают почему задаются именно эти вопросы и именно этому человеку. Ответы, заметим, всё равно корректируются, но тут уже всё зависит от параноидальности конкретного индивида.

О великих мира сего

Дочитал, наконец, последнего „номерного“ Пратчетта. Когда читаешь весь Discworld подряд, очень интересно наблюдать за эволюцией авторской мысли. Сперва (1983–1990) просто качественные пародийные произведения, для смакования которых необходимо сперва повариться в подражателях Толкиену и Говарду. Чистое и незамутнённое веселье. Следующая стадия (1990–2001) уже скорее развитие заложенных, без особых планов на тот момент, сюжетных линий, персонажей и мира в целом. Исключением, пожалуй, можно назвать лишь The Truth (2000). Юмор остался прежним, но всё становится более цельным и, вдобавок, высмеиваются не только и не столько шаблоны жанра, но и реальные события и явления. Для меня, бесспорно, лучшая часть серии.

Потом, судя по всему, автору надоели старые герои, и он ударился в поиск новых образов. 2002–????. Не знаю, мой субъективизм ставит Moistа von Lupwigа, Tiffany Aching и прочих сильно ниже, чем бессмертное трио ведьм или оригинальный состав городской стражи. К сожалению, ещё как минимум две книги с новичками выйдут точно. Ближайшая, однако, вроде бы посвящена Rincewindу и его коллегам. Подождём до октября.

Сегодня посмотрю фильм по самой первой книге. Даже интересно, на что это может быть похоже, особенно с учётом того, что фильм новый, а персонажи, особенно Патриций, изменились за это время ну просто неимоверно. Обзоры не читал. В несмотренных фильмах лежит Hogfather, мультфильм по Wyrd Sisters не вдохновил, т.к. видел его лишь в переозвучке.

Чтобы сэкономить всем время и нервы, стоит, наверное, сразу перейти к тому, вокруг чего Льюис вертит все свои построения и мысли.

Извиняйте за хреновое качество, лучше в сети не нашёл. Именно эта монструозность красуется на задней части обложки моего кирпича. Расшифровка:

blue linear-active – cool, factual, decisive planners
red multi-active – warm, emotional, loquacious, impulsive
yellow reactive – courteous, amiable, accomodating, compromiser, good listener

Само собой все страны не двух- а трёхмерны, но график сознательно упрощён, чтобы позволить пользователю быстрее ориентироваться. Для полноты картины следует, вдобавок, учитывать возрастные показатели.

Таким образом, в идеале, перед переговорами нужно найти на графике все страны, так или иначе участвующие в работе целевой компании, дабы поставить точку где-то внутри магического треугольника. После этого нужно добавить возрастных цветов (красный для <30, синий для 30-50, жёлтый для >50). Если в переговорах будут участвовать женщины, то можно ещё немного красного плеснуть. Ну и уже после этого перечитать все советы про страны и общие детали про доминирующий цвет.

Для честности, большая часть всего этого мне кажется лажей. Но кажется лажей лишь по той причине, что на всех переговорах, где я сидел… неподалёку, присутствовали представители международных, в самом полном смысле этого слова, компаний. Практически всё руководство там – образчик того, что можно назвать „successful international businessman“. Они, безусловно, подвержены национально-возрастно-полово-культурному воздействию, но ожидать, что они не выучили этого самого Льюиса наизусть, по меньшей мере глупо. Т.е. если какой-нибудь американец вдруг решит поехать договариваться с Мончегорским ЦБК, например, то его, наверное, Льюис спасёт от нескольких ошибок. Попытки же основываться на этом талмуде при работе с руководством какого-нибудь Acer или McDonalds – пустая трата времени.

В то же время, исходя, опять же, из личного и аккумулированного другими методами опыта, Льюис очень удобен при обычных контактах с представителями культур „без галстука“. Тот же автор в своих примерах часто упоминает различных студентов по обмену и тому подобных личностей, которые не имеют отношения к деловым переговорам, но являются замечательными образчиками для его построений.

Ну и, чтобы убрать серьёзность, второй тур викторины. На мой взгляд – посложнее первого.

После уже упоминавшейся 1001ой ночи, я просто обязан обозреть ещё некоторые, гораздо более поздние, эксперименты над глазами несчастных любителей анимации и мультипликации.

A race of cannibal monsters called the Shokujinki exists and it is the job of the Kifuuken, an elite group of beast-hunters, to stop them. Toshihiko Momota, an expert swordsman and son of the Kifuuken organization’s leader, unexpectedly falls in love at first sight with a beautiful girl named Yuka. However, the couple’s relationship is much more complicated than it seems at first glance, for Yuka is a Shokujinki.

Описание достаточно простое, а вот в тэгах царит бардак и суматоха – даже если абстрагироваться от „служебных“ меток, легко понять, что единого мнения о том, что именно происходит на экране, люди выработать не смогли. Чтобы не мучаться, начнём с легкого – с сюжета.

На самом деле всё просто: автор взял известную цитату из Ницше (которая про охоту на чудовищ) и развил тему по полной программе, щедро удобряя сценарий смесью клише из различных жанров и бессмертных сюжетов. Любой мало-мальски грамотный критик легко проведёт параллели с Ромео и Джульеттой, Каином и Авелем, да ещё и Крёстного отца с Протоколами сионских мудрецов приплетёт. Конспирология, любовь, соперничество, монстры ну и всё такое. Если бы не исполнение – был бы достаточно обычный мультик, в японских терминах разумеется.

Но есть исполнение. Время от времени студия Madhouse, видимо, решает, что нужно как-то оправдывать своё название в глазах потребителя. И делает что-нибудь этакое. Вот и здесь решили выпендриться. Выпендрились.

Для осуществления выпендрёжа был приглашён Масааки Юаса. Ему, собственно, дали картбланш, попросив только побольше крови, секса и насилия (это не то чтобы официальная версия, просто подозрения). Чем был известен господин Юаса? Ну, кроме анимаций для некоторых проектов (упоминания достойны Мои соседи – семья Ямада), на тот момент за ним числились два самостоятельных детища: малоизвестный широкому кругу Mind Game и… (фанфары) Cat Soup!

Кошачий суп прогремел (иного и не скажешь) по миру в лохматом 2002ом году. Даже в нашем уездном городе, как сейчас помню, люди, у которых слово „мультфильмы“ было синонимом к Ну, погоди!, захлёбываясь восторгом рассказывали о мёртвом котейке и его похождениях. Имя создателя, естественно, никого не интересовало. Для всех, кроме фанатов и специалистов, он так и остался „никому не известным японским режиссёром“ (превед, Парфёнов!)

Юаса оказался хорош. Картинка не похожа ни на что существующее (лучшая похвала для современного художника), зритель постоянно долбится сменами ракурсов, дрожащими контурами и киношными спецэффектами. Кровища выглядит кровавой, рубка – жестокой, секс – полным страсти и всего такого. Просмотр каждой серии (Юаса впервые делал что-то многосерийное) выжимает и напоминает скорее утомительный труд, чем удовольствие. Расслабиться не получится. Я терпеть не могу современное искусство, но в данном случае однозначный зачёт и респект. Если есть время и желание, то посмотреть этот образчик стоит. Очень пользительно также для любителей фразы „аниме – это про девочек с большими глазами“, так как большие глаза, в данном случае, являются прерогативой зрителя.

Что ещё добавить? Главную женскую роль озвучивала ~~старая жопа~~ заслуженная озвучивалка Хекиру (на самом деле Макико, но это сикрет) Шиина, известная многим по древнему кошмарику Magic Knight Rayearth. Мужскую роль озвучивал менее известный (как и все мужики-озвучиватели), но и по сей день очень востребованный Хиденобу Киучи.

Ах, да! Если вы иногда (даже очень редко) в процессе половых утех представляете, что партнёр от избытка страсти сейчас вас покалечит или изгрызёт, то всё-таки лучше не смотрите. Особенно на ночь. Я предупредил.

PS: Поймал себя на неправильной транслитерации имён, но решил, что и дальше буду писать „как слышу“, а не как правильно. Правильно – это например Киути вместо Киучи и Сиина вместо Шиина.

О многокультурии + викторына

По причинам дел рабочих, часть моего стола уверенно и безоговорочно занимает кирпич некоего Ричарда Д. Льюиса, посвящённый многообразию населения нашей планетки. Называется он пафосно, выглядит заумно, но на самом деле являет из себя карманный справочник юного глобалиста.

После долгой (хорошей, интересной, иллюстрированной) теории автор, за что ему огромная благодарность, резко переходит к „мясу“ – списку стран с краткими (или длинными) инструкциями на тему того, как именно жителям этих самых стран чего-нибудь продавать. Ну или у них покупать, хотя это реже. Make business, короче.

Сам я, тьфу-тьфу-тьфу, этим самым бизьнесём не занимаюсь, но при возникающих контактах заглядываю в шпаргалочку. Местами там банальности, местами – чушь (или что-то на неё сильно смахивающее), но полной глупости супербук обычно не советует. Вот и стало интересно, насколько легко определить страну по „инструкции“ как с ней работать. :)

Итак, что нужно делать с жителями этой страны (все названия стран удалены, дословность текста сохранена):

Distinguish them clearly from the neighbor nation. Appreciate the uniqueness of their culture.
Exercise cultural sensitivity. It is arguably the world’s most multicultural country.
Show tolerance at all times.
Be low key and reliable.

Meetings are essentially democratic, where everyone airs his or her views.

Compromise is usually part of the process.
Try to get the agreement of everyone in the room (if possible) before finalizing decisions or initiating action.

When dealing with (specific, culture-different part of the residents), you may liven up considerably.

Getting overly excited about anything, particularly politics.
Underestimating their economic impact, fine humanitarian record and moral authority.

1001 ночь, перезагрузка

Посмотрел тут, давеча очередной шедевр анимации.

Начиналось всё, само собой, очень хорошо. Первое, на что смотришь, когда выбираешь что посмотреть на сон грядущий, это тэги, которыми заботливые люди помечают всё, до чего могут дотянуться. Тэги волновали и обещали много чудных открытий: Demons, Fantasy, Nudity, Romance, Dark Fantasy, Sex, Twisted. Обычно такой набор не может вызвать ничего, кроме восторга, что до что после просмотра как такового.

Увы, иногда надо читать и описание: “Presented in the form of a feverish love dream, 1001 Nights (based on Amano’s book of artwork) is the first performance of the groundbreaking "Filmharmonic" series, which presents new orchestral works by film composers in tandem with short films made by A-list directors. Проще говоря – 25 минут модернового дерьма. Пятна цвета плавно переливаются от вида голой тётки до вида синего мужика с рогами. Иногда они даже появляются одновременно. Музыка уверенно проходит по категории „ничё так“, но связь её с картинкой скорее утомляет, чем доставляет удовольствие.

Вот тебе, бабушка, и dark fantasy.

PS: Автор визуальной части этого безобразия, никто иной как Ёшитака (или Йошитака – на ваш вкус) Амано. Он широко известен как автор гламурных дядечек из всяких Vampire Hunter D, и чуть менее известен (а зря) как участник разработок всех частей сериала Final Fantasy, с 1987го по сегодняшний день включительно. Все безумно-воздушные виньетки, которыми украшают коробочки, именно его работа.

Но мультик от этого лучше не становится. Вот так.

В очередной раз убедился, что я грустный и ни о чём. Ну то есть может и о чём, но слишком ленивый, чтобы из-за этого переставать быть грустным. Сложно.

Если бы кто-нибудь сказал бы мне лет этак двадцать назад, что очередной день рождения пионерии я буду отмечать: а) на территории режимного завода; б) валяясь на диване в середине рабочего дня; в) попивая немецкое пиво; г) работая на швейцарскую организацию...

Я бы, наверное, обиделся и сказал бы, что такого быть не может, а отмечать я буду на Луне. Ну или Марсе. Эх.
